The beginner building series on my blog contains easy building projects that require no power tools and use few skills. Today I am sharing a roundup up of 5 easy French farmhouse building projects.
5 Easy French Farmhouse Beginner Building Projects
I was never a handy person, and never around anyone that was, so this is how I began my DIY journey. Trying to save money, I started doing little decor projects and some bigger projects around the house. I didn’t have any power tools, so I used a hammer and nails and a miter box and saw for most projects. I also used the home improvement stores to cut my lumber for me. If they wouldn’t, I used a miter box and saw. Here are the first five projects of my beginner building series.
Project 1- Easy Weathered Wood Serving Tray
This project starts with learning the basic skill of hammering a nail. Once you can do that, all these projects are a piece of cake. Did you even know that hammering a nail can be done wrong? Or that it is not a skill that comes naturally? Well I found out first hand! I wasn’t hammering correctly! My nails were always bent and crooked and I was always frustrated. Start with this basic project and practice hammering nails.
Project 2 – French Fruit Crate
I had always wanted a French fruit crate but never wanted to spend the money for it, so I built my own! This can be built in all different sizes, and I have built two so far. They have been displayed all over my house. I try to update the post with new pictures as I use it. See all the displays and the easy building tutorial for the French fruit crate.
Project 3 – Rustic Garden Cart
This garden cart was built last fall for my front porch. I used it this summer to hold terracotta pots filled with flowers. And wouldn’t this be cute to hold a Christmas tree? If you can build the french crate, you can build this cart. It is very similar, just longer boards. Get the plans for the rustic garden cart here.
Project 4 – French Drying Rack
This is probably my favorite project to date. It has such an authentic french antique feel. I introduce the miter box and back saw in this post, and it was also when I discovered lath. I was looking for inexpensive wood slats and lath was perfect. It is super easy to cut by hand. As a result it could be used for the french fruit crate if you need to cut the wood yourself. Project 5 – Plate Rack
Or is this one my favorite? Let’s face it, I really love them all! This plate rack is designed specifically for displaying platters backwards. And that is the number one reason I like to build my own things. I can customize them to fit my specific space and style. I never liked anything I put on this wall, but this platter rack has been here quite a while, and I’m not tired of it yet! Customizing the rack to fit a narrow wall was key.
