I found this little French provincial table with a faux marble top at a thrift store. I pictured a rustic and refined look. To achieve this, I painted the table white and made a reclaimed wood look table top out of lath.
How to Create a Reclaimed Wood Look Tabletop Out of Lath
I wanted to create a reclaimed wood look top with an alternating pattern. The first step was to remove the faux marble and replace it with a board cut to size with a jigsaw. This will be the base for the lath strips. I actually used a scrap piece of dry erase board I had on hand.
To create the new top, I cut pieces of lath with my chop saw.
Keeping the color variation of the boards in mind, I cut the lath into a pattern with different colors and sizes.
I really like the lath in it’s natural state, and could have just sealed it. However for my space, I wanted a little more color.
I used a combination of stain colors to achieve the look .
Create A Black Wash Over Stain
I wanted to add one more color to the boards, so I did a black wash over a few slats. It was super simple. Just put some black craft paint on a plate, dip a paint brush in water, and dip in the paint. With a very watery paint, brush over the surface of the board and then wipe off with a cloth.
A before and after of the board with the black wash.
How to Finish the Table
I painted the table white using my homemade chalk paint. The lath pieces were glued onto the dry erase board with wood glue.
I love the rustic and refined look! The lath naturally lends itself to a reclaimed wood look for the tabletop.
