White summer cottage was the inspiration for my dining room refresh. You know I love to change my decor seasonally and this year I gave the dining room cool, crisp, white decor for summer. White slip covered furniture, white dishes, and garden or coastal accessories are all things that remind me of a summer cottage. Today I wanted to share with you a few tricks on how to give a room white cottage style without redecorating!
My Summer Dining Room
Lots of fresh flowers from the garden are always a must for summer cottage style. To keep with the crisp white theme, I used white ironstone vessels to hold the colorful cut flowers.
A white tablecloth over the dark wood table adds more white cottage style. I tucked a little bouquet of flowers in the tablecloth and tied it with ribbon, just because.
Lots of entertaining happens in a summer cottage and that means lots of treats with fresh berries. A chocolate cake with whipped cream and raspberries is on the menu today. The water is flavored with lime and raspberries, very refreshing! In place of a tray, I used old sheet music and books to create a centerpiece. These pretty white dishes were a thrift store find.
Draping furniture with white linens is a quick and easy way to create a white cottage feel. They are easy to remove and wash, making it a more casual and carefree atmosphere for the summer. The lace pillow covers on the chairs are Victorian. I found them at an estate sale. They are very delicate and I had to repair them, but they are so beautiful.
I whipped up a new pillow for the settee from this pretty vintage inspired fabric. That was a long time in the works (procrastination), but I finally did it! Stacks of white table cloths and napkins on the factory cart are easy to grab for table switch outs.
The table in the entry was decorated with more whites, fresh flowers, and garden accessories.
5 Tips To Give A Room White Summer Cottage Style
- Slipcover furniture in white with washable throw blankets, sheets, or other linens.
- Remove dark colored accessories and replace them with light colored garden or coastal accessories. An accent color can be added, but use it minimally. I opted for soft pink colors. A pretty green or blue would be an excellent choice.
- Display white dishes on shelves and tables.
- Use white tablecloths, runners, or dresser scarves over dark wood furniture.
- Place fresh cut flowers in white pitchers, vases, or tureens.
