Repurpose A Fence Picket Into A Hanging Rack

by Janet Clark at Home

nails on a fence picket in the kitchen

There are so many beautiful options when it comes to hanging racks or rails for the kitchen. I knew I wanted to add one under my open shelving in the kitchen, but couldn’t decide on a style. I had a couple of wrought iron hanging hook rails from Amazon in my cart, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. It didn’t feel right. I was scrolling Pinterest when an image sparked the idea to use my fence picket. Not only did I love the idea, but it was going to be free! So here is how to repurpose a fence picket into a hanging rack for the kitchen.

How To Build A Farmhouse Style Rolling Cart

by Janet Clark at Home

farmhouse style rolling cart DIY

When I added the buffet and hutch to our stair wall last fall, I knew I wanted to add something next to it. It just seemed lost and out of place. I had seen a rustic rolling cart at the antique mall. After I got home, I decided to buy it, but when I went back it was gone. So of course, I decided to figure out how to build a farmhouse style rolling cart myself. The cart at the mall reminded me of crates stacked on top of each other. Because I wanted to use wood I already had, I got the idea to build something that looked like a crate standing on its end.

How To Make An “Antique” Sign

by Janet Clark at Home

A DIY antique sign with dress form

A lot of my ideas start out very grandiose, and then I have to reel them in, sometimes waaay in. My original vision for this wall was to cover it in faux brick and paint a really large sign on the brick, like the side of an old building. Have you seen that? Such a cool industrial look, but maybe a bit much for this room, at least right now. So I reeled that way in and decided to make a sign to hang on the wall. My artistic talents are very limited, but this project doesn’t really take any. Perfect! Today, I am going to show you how to make an “antique” sign using stencils.

Old Cabinet Becomes An Antique Specimen Cabinet

by Janet Clark at Home

DIY reproduction specimen/map cabinet

What has 20 drawers, 40 pieces of hardware, and 120 screws? This cabinet! Not that I am keeping track or anything. I found this old cabinet on Facebook Marketplace and fell in love with all the drawers. Who doesn’t love drawers, right? I had no place to put it, but I decided to worry about that later. All those drawers needed to be put to good use, so I rearranged my studio to make a place that it would fit. That’s when I knew I wanted to change the style. See how a painted green old cabinet becomes an antique specimen cabinet.

How To Create An Antique Rust Finish on Hardware

by Janet Clark at Home

diy antique rust finish for drawer hardware

I am working on turning a cabinet I picked up on Facebook marketplace into an antique looking file/specimen cabinet. Well this cabinet has 20 drawers, so in order to keep things in budget, I had to find some inexpensive hardware. These cup pulls were the right style and price, but they were too smooth and shiny for my “antique cabinet”. I needed to figure out how to create an antique rust finish on the hardware. I came up with two ways!
