How to Make a Kitchen Island From a Dresser

by Janet Clark at Home

My sister wanted to make a rolling kitchen island out of an old dresser and asked for my help. Of course I was all in, and I just love how it turned out! Coming up with a design proved to be a bit of a challenge. Every dresser is going to be different, so there is no magic formula to follow. I am going to show you our method with this particular dresser. Here is how to make a rolling kitchen island from a dresser.

How To Transform A Cabinet Into A Display Case

by Janet Clark at Home

I turned a china cabinet into a display case and filled it with antique books and an antique mannequin bust

I purchased this display bust while I was on a little weekend trip. Happy birthday to me! Looking for a place to put the bust, I came up with the idea to turn my china cabinet into more of a display case. And as always, I wanted to be able to easily take it back to the original whenever I was ready. Today I am going to share how to transform a cabinet into a beautiful display case. You might also call it a bookcase?

Old Cabinet Becomes An Antique Specimen Cabinet

by Janet Clark at Home

DIY reproduction specimen/map cabinet

What has 20 drawers, 40 pieces of hardware, and 120 screws? This cabinet! Not that I am keeping track or anything. I found this old cabinet on Facebook Marketplace and fell in love with all the drawers. Who doesn’t love drawers, right? I had no place to put it, but I decided to worry about that later. All those drawers needed to be put to good use, so I rearranged my studio to make a place that it would fit. That’s when I knew I wanted to change the style. See how a painted green old cabinet becomes an antique specimen cabinet.

How To Create An Antique Rust Finish on Hardware

by Janet Clark at Home

diy antique rust finish for drawer hardware

I am working on turning a cabinet I picked up on Facebook marketplace into an antique looking file/specimen cabinet. Well this cabinet has 20 drawers, so in order to keep things in budget, I had to find some inexpensive hardware. These cup pulls were the right style and price, but they were too smooth and shiny for my “antique cabinet”. I needed to figure out how to create an antique rust finish on the hardware. I came up with two ways!

A New Buffet For The Kitchen

by Janet Clark at Home

I had been looking for a new piece of furniture to put in the kitchen dining area. When I switched our round dining table with the farm table, it left more room for a narrow “something”. The “something” I found was very smelly and the hardware needed a little makeover. Today I am going to share how I spruced up a new buffet for the kitchen.

How To Create An Antique Finish

by Janet Clark at Home

This isn’t the typical “sand all the edges and add antiquing glaze” antique finish, or a super chippy kind of finish. This is “it has been repainted several times, but is showing some age” type of finish. I studied all kinds of antique mantels, including the one in my dining room, and I landed on this technique that feels so authentic. I am going to show you how to create an antique finish on a fireplace mantel and how to apply furniture appliques.

A Reclaimed Wood Look Tabletop

by Janet Clark at Home

A table makeover with a reclaimed wood look top

I found this little French provincial table with a faux marble top at a thrift store. I pictured a rustic and refined look. To achieve this, I painted the table white and made a reclaimed wood look table top out of lath.
