Ready for the easiest DIY you ever DIY-ed? I have seen these wood risers that are salvaged from old posts or columns everywhere!
They are used to display so many things – plants, candles, seasonal items like pumpkins, under cloches, you name it. And I want one! I have not come across one that was reasonably priced, so DIY it is.
The riser I am making today is about as simple as they come. I’m also imagining making ones with three layers, or with molding around the base. The wheels are turning!
Gather Your Supplies
- Terracotta saucer
- wood block
- white spray paint
- E6000 glue
- Stain for antiquing
I purchased this wood box sign and terracotta saucer from Hobby Lobby. The box is almost 8 inches square and the saucer is almost 7 inches. You could also use a scrap piece of wood to make the square. This purchased box had good height and was inexpensive, so I gave it a try.
Simple Steps To Build A Salvage Wood Riser
Step 1 – prepare the block
If you purchased this block sign, you will need to remove the hanger on the back with a screw driver.
Step 2 – Measure and mark the placement of the saucer
Find the center placement of the saucer by measuring from the edges. It was about a half inch. Measure on all sides so it is even.
After you get it centered, draw around the saucer with a pencil.
Step 3 – Glue the saucer to the block
Run a bead of the E6000 glue around the edges of the saucer.
Turn the saucer over and place inside your pencil marks. Press down and let dry.
Step 3 – paint and antique for that salvaged look
I used Krylon chalky finish white spray paint.
After the pain dries, add some distressing to the wood for an aged look.
I used these implements of destruction to distress my wood block, but whatever you have on hand works.
Poke holes, saw edges, make scratches. Have fun with it!
After the wood has been distressed, put a small amount of stain on a rag and run around the edges, and here and there, and wipe off excess immediately.
And there you have it! For about $5.00 (not counting paint and stain I had on hand, and of course using Hobby Lobby’s coupon) an architectural salvage piece to display your favorite things.
Here is another way I styled the riser. It happened to be the perfect size to hold a hurricane candle holder!
