I decided to create a gold mirror gallery wall for the narrow hallway that connects the entryway and the family room. Since I have never been one to pass up a pretty gold mirror at a thrift store, there were plenty in my stash to create the gallery wall. However, I did not have the right shape mirror for one spot on the wall. A quick trip to the thrift store and I had an inexpensive mirror that just needed a little makeover. I am going to show you how to create an antique gold frame with spray paint and antiquing wax.

The Before
The mirror I picked up at the thrift store was pink plastic, but it had the details of vintage gold mirrors I had seen many times at antique stores.

How To Create An Antique Gold Frame
I grabbed my leftover cans of gold spray paint and got to work. Layers are always a good idea when creating an aged finish, therefore I started with a dark gold paint and topped it with an irregular coat of light gold. This irregular coat of paint allowed the dark paint to peek through.

I used Rust-Oleum antique brass metallic for the dark base coat. Rust-Oleum gold rush metallic was used for the light top coat.

Adding the dark wax gave the mirror a truly authentic antique look. You can use a brush or cloth. I happened to have the end of a foam brush, so that’s what I used.

Apply the dark wax in all the crevices, wiping off any excess. I also added the wax around the edges of the frame. I keep light wax available. You can use it to remove the dark wax if you get too much. I did not need it for this project.

And there you have it. A simple $3.00 DIY that completed my gold mirror gallery wall.

And since it was impossible to take a picture of the mirror in my tiny hallway, here it is in the dining room.
