Hutch Refresh With Starched Vintage Recipes

by Janet Clark at Home

old hutch filled with ironstone collection

Today I added a little “somethin’ that ain’t nothin'” to my kitchen hutch. If I have said it once, I have said it a hundred times, I love old paper things! This recipe box full of old recipe cards was found at an estate sale. Incorporating them in the kitchen decor somehow would be so fun, so I did a hutch refresh with starched vintage recipes.

I could spend hours looking through this box. I love the actual recipes, the handwriting on the recipe cards, and the newspaper ads on the backs of cut out recipes.

Very amusing and often inappropriate.

People would jot down recipes on any scrap paper they had laying around. There are appointment cards, church donation cards, and receipts. Of course I love looking at all of it, seeing how much has changed, and how it is really all the same.

How I Did A Hutch Refresh With Starched Vintage Recipes

My thought was to cover the back of one the hutch cubbies with the recipes. This was a quick and easy project that will be easy to remove if needed.

Lay Out The Design

Pattern to make a collage

I started with a piece of wrapping paper cut to the size of my hutch opening.

Lay out a design that is pleasing to you, overlapping in different ways. Then snap a picture! I always forget which piece was layered under which.

Use Starch To Attach The Recipes

And this is how it turned out! Something that isn’t really much of anything, but makes me smile.

Naturally I had to add flowers for a picture, and you can barely see the recipes! Oh well, there will not always be flowers.

Adding vintage or antique paper to a space is always a fun way to bring in a bit of history and charm. It’s the little things.
