Repurpose A Fence Picket Into A Hanging Rack

by Janet Clark at Home

There are so many beautiful options when it comes to hanging racks or rails for the kitchen. I knew I wanted to add one under my open shelving in the kitchen, but couldn’t decide on a style. I had a couple of wrought iron hanging hook rails from Amazon in my cart, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. It didn’t feel right. I was scrolling Pinterest when an image sparked the idea to use my fence picket. Not only did I love the idea, but it was going to be free! So here is how to repurpose a fence picket into a hanging rack for the kitchen.

How To Turn A Fence Picket Into A Kitchen Hanging Rack

Well, here’s my fence picket. A nice weathered gray with awesome chippy white paint. I had two of these left over from another project.

I cut it into two pieces to fit in between the brackets of my kitchen shelves.

How To Seal Chippy Paint

As I mentioned, the picket had some wonderful chippy paint, but it was all flaking off. I wanted to seal the paint to prevent more chipping, and I also wanted to be able to wipe it down for cleaning.

I chose Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish to seal the chipping paint, two coats. This barely changes the color of the wood and has no shine. So far not one fleck of paint has come off!

Next I used nails as the “pegs” for my rack. I actually spray painted my nails black because I didn’t have any old nails. Next time I go to ReStore I will check for some old nails. They usually have cans filled with them for sale. I love imagining the old garage they came from and the craftsman (or craftswoman) that had them saved for the next project.

I just screwed the boards right into the wall.

Of course, I had to do some shelf restyling at the same time.

So there you have it, a simple way to repurpose a fence picket into a hanging rack for the kitchen. Projects don’t get much easier than this and it is true love for me. All the fancier options are pretty, but give me weathered and worn any day! Oh, and free!

PIN IT FOR LATER!

I love that idea. I also love repurposed items and prefer old over new any day.
